Designer scarves, from the 1940s to the ’80s, made by big-name designers—Chanel, Hermes, Gucci, Valentino, Pucci, and Yves Saint Laurent—were originally made for a more affluent crowd and are still fairly expensive. Vintage Vera scarves were more affordable then, and are a bargain today (and easy to find). Snag a Vera for $15 to $75; a vintage Hermes can be as much as $350. Shop for most designer scarves online or from a vintage-clothing dealer or boutique. Look for crisp color lines; hand-rolled, stitched edges; and, usually, a signature.
