The Basics: Salvaged green shutters become doors for this laundry room utility cabinet.
How To: To start, make the cabinet box. Cut four 1x8 boards the length and width of your shutters, then wood-glue and screw them together. Screw a pegboard to the back, then nail mitered trim around the inside edges. Three 1×4 boards (top, center, and bottom) behind the pegboard add support. Paint, let dry, then attach shutters with old hinges. Last, add magnetic latches and handles. Want the look for less? Attach shutters to an existing cabinet.

What We Learned
JunkMarket’s tried-and-true tips for you to apply to your cool junk.
Sue and Ki’s window screens don’t match exactly, and that’s OK. Adapt your projects to the unique junk you find.
The gals swear by Minwax Wood Finish ($4) to unify different wood stains.
Check if salvaged shutters are warped by laying them flat on the ground. Measure the pair, too, to be sure they are a size match.
A coat of satin or matte polyurethane prevents the window screens from rusting and keeps any residue from coming off on your clothes. Polyurethane also works to keep chippy paint (such as on the shutters) from flaking off wood.
