Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. On a table saw, rip the 1x8 to 61/4 inches wide for the top shelf (A on the illustration), then rip the 1x10 to 9 inches wide for the bottom shelf (B on the illustration). Sand edges smooth, then wipe away dust with a tack cloth.

2. Enlarge the template on a photocopier, then transfer the design to the 1x10 shelf stiles (C on the illustration). Cut out with a jigsaw, sand smooth, and wipe with a tack cloth.
3. Using the measurements shown on the illustration, clamp the shelves to the stiles. Attach with wood glue and 6d finishing nails; let dry.

4. To finish, apply walnut paste stain with a soft cloth according to manufacturer’s instructions. Brush on one coat of dark green acrylic latex paint. Let dry, then apply antiquing liquid with a soft cloth. Let dry thoroughly. To distress, sand away the finish at the natural areas of wear, such as shelf and stile edges. Apply one or two coats of polyurethane to protect the finish; let dry.
5. To mount the shelf assembly to the wall, locate wall studs with stud finder and mark locations with a pencil. Install four corner braces to the underside of each shelf, spaced so each brace can be attached to a wall stud. Have a helper hold the shelf assembly against the wall, using a level to make sure it’s straight, then drive screws through the braces and into the wall studs.
